The walls and the Monumental City Gates

Walls of Treviso:

The Walls of Treviso date back to the Middle Age, started in the 12th century, with subsequent extensions in the following centuries. They were designed to protec the city from external invasions and attacks, thus reflecting the historical context and the defensive needs of the time. The walls are well preserved and surround the historical centre of Treviso, creating a kind of defensive ring. Walking along the city walls offers a panoramic view over the town and its surroundings.

Monumental City Gates

Treviso can boast several monumental gates, that were at the time the main access points to the town through the walls. The Gates:

  • Porta San Tomaso: Located South-West, this gate is characterized by an imposing arch and was an important point of access to the town.
  • Porta Santi Quaranta: Located South-East, this gate is named after the nearby Church of Santi Quaranta. Its architecture reflects the defensive medieval style.
  • Porta Altinia: Located North-East, is one of oldest gates. Its name is a homage to Altino, a nearby Roman town.
  • Porta Manzoni: Located North-West, this gate was so named in honor of the writer and poet Alessandro Manzoni. It is one of the most recent gates, dating back to the 19th century

Location: Viale B. Burchiellati, 28A, 31100 Treviso
